Becoming Prime Minister in 1983 after three years of military rule, the former engineer forged a working Turkish capitalism and brought roads and electricity to the remotest hamlets. A personal friend of George Bush's and an important ally during the Gulf War, Ozal had remained influential even after his party was defeated in 1991 and his longtime rival Suleyman Demirel became Prime Minister.
